The naturopathic model is that all disease starts in the colon, so it is good practice for everyone to maintain a clean colon.
Just imagine how quickly things would get nasty if the refuse disposal operatives went on strike or your sewage outlet became blocked!
Well, the same is true of your body. Your colon effectively acts as your personal ‘septic tank’ and it needs regular emptying otherwise its contents are re-absorbed into the body in a process known as ‘auto-intoxication’.
Toxic metals will be eliminated primarily in the bile which empties into the small intestine and to prevent re-absorption you need to ensure that intestinal contents are being eliminated efficiently.
Any deposits will also prevent the efficient absorption of water which may cause diarrhoea and conversely, may form an internal ‘splint’ that prevents the efficient propelling of wastes causing constipation. Yeast and ultimately parasites can also flourish in these deposits. When the bowels are not functioning properly the other organs of excretion such at the kidneys and particularly the liver are placed under an increased strain.
Psyllium husks
It is really important that you defecate at least once a day (ideally three times a day) and that you maintain this throughout The Natural Recovery Plan and for the rest of your life.
Psyllium husks can be bought fairly cheaply at most health food shops and a level teaspoon stirred into a glass of juice or water and taken once or twice a day will help regulate your bowel movements and act as an ‘internal broom’ cleaning accumulated debris from the bowel walls and absorbing and eliminating bile.
Colonic hydrotherapy
Ideally, all treatment for chronic or degenerative disorders would start with a course of colonic hydrotherapy and thereafter with regular maintenance treatments. A lot of people are naturally resistant to this idea and yet, there really is no point pumping high quality supplements into your system if you have a colon full of compacted faecal waste which is constantly poisoning your system – and particularly your liver. Another bonus is that the beneficial effects can be achieved relatively fast – many chronic problems can be impacted within a few weeks.
The reason why we have come to need something as ‘unnatural’ as colonic irrigation in order to maintain health is because our diet is so far removed from the natural diet that we evolved eating for millions of years. We are designed to eat raw and fresh – not iced buns, lager, cheesy snacks and coloured fruit sweets and candies!
In addition, the stress that is endemic to modern life intimately and adversely affects our digestion through what is known as the ‘second brain’ – a dense mass of nerves in the intestines. Alcohol; additives; pesticides; fertilisers; pharmaceutical and recreational drugs; tobacco and lack of exercise all have a part to play too.
A colonic is not the same as an enema. With colonic hydrotherapy the aim is to cleanse the entire large colon (about 1.6m/5ft) whereas with an enema it is only the rectum (the last 30cm/12in) that is purged.
What happens at treatment?
People are often anxious about treatment, but most colonic hydrotherapists are sensitive to these concerns and your modesty is preserved except for initial access. A small tube (5cm/1.5in) is inserted into your rectum and your colon is washed out repeatedly with about 1 litre (2 pints) of warm water at a time.
The whole system is fully enclosed, so it is not messy or unpleasant. All the equipment used is either sterilised or disposable. There are often no pumps, using only the slight water pressure created by gravity and only filtered water is ever used.
The treatment is gentle and safe - even for the elderly and frail. Initial therapy may require between 4 and 6 visits usually a week apart. Thereafter, one visit every 4 – 6 months should maintain the treatment, although you may prefer to attend more often during the detoxification to prevent re-absorption of metals and toxins. Obviously eating a good diet full of the natural fibres in fruit and vegetables should also help to keep things moving between visits.
